Saving, syncing and restoring sessions — 44 answers, 9 topics.

Getting started

What a session manager is and how to start using one.

What is a session manager?

A session manager is a browser extension that saves your open tabs and windows as a named session, so you can close them and bring everything back later in one click. Unlike a bookmark, a session captures your whole working context — every tab, its order and its pinned state. New to the idea? Start with Bookmark Manager vs Session Manager.

What is Super Session Manager?

Super Session Manager is a free, privacy-first session and tab manager for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. It saves and restores sessions, takes automatic crash-recovery snapshots, preserves tab groups, suspends idle tabs to save memory, and includes 150+ tab utilities. See the full list on the features page.

Do I need an account to use it?

No. Everything core — saving, restoring, snapshots, folders, import and export — works without signing in, and your sessions stay on your device. You only need to sign in with Google if you want cloud sync, sharing pages or Pro features.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to open the extension?

Yes. Press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows and Linux, or Cmd+Shift+S on macOS, to open the popup. There is also a separate shortcut command that saves the current window without opening any UI — you can set it from your browser’s extension shortcuts page.

Can I open a saved session from the address bar?

Yes. Type “session”, then press Tab or Space in the address bar and start typing a session name. Pick a match to launch it — handy when you know exactly which project you want back.

Saving & restoring

Capturing tabs and getting them back exactly as they were.

How do I save all my open tabs?

Open the extension, type a name and press Save — every tab in the current window is stored as one session. You can preview the tab list first and untick anything you don’t want to keep. Step-by-step guide: How to save Chrome tabs before closing.

Can I save tabs without typing a name?

Yes. The quick temporary session saves every open tab instantly into a dedicated slot. You can promote it to a permanent named session later, download it as a text file, or clear it in one click.

Can I save several windows at once?

Yes, with Pro. Turn on Multi-Window in Tab Settings and a save captures the tabs from every open window, not only the focused one. Restoring brings each window back separately.

Does it save and restore tab groups?

Yes, with Pro. Group names, colors, collapsed state and tab order are all recreated when you reopen the session. Not sure which tool fits your workflow? Read Tab Groups vs Bookmarks vs Sessions.

Can I update a session I saved earlier?

Yes. You can add the current window or a single tab to an existing session, replace it with your current tabs, remove individual tabs, or rename it inline. Saving with a name you already use asks before overwriting, so nothing is replaced by accident.

Will restoring a huge session slow down my computer?

No. Sessions with more than 20 tabs restore with each tab held asleep and loaded only when you click it, so an 80-tab restore doesn’t pin your CPU or memory. You can change this under Settings → Restoring sessions.

Organizing sessions

Folders, favorites, search and the Advanced Mode workspace.

What is Advanced Mode?

Advanced Mode is a full-screen workspace for your session library, with a folder sidebar, quick views, a details panel, multi-select bulk actions, a command palette and keyboard shortcuts. It is a Pro feature that every user can try free for 7 days — see it in action.

How do I find a session quickly?

Use the search bar, which matches session names as well as the tabs inside them. You can also sort by last opened, most used or date added, or arrange sessions in your own drag-and-drop order (advanced sorting is part of Pro).

What are favorites and archived sessions?

Favorites pin a session to the top of your list; archiving tucks a session away without deleting it, and you can restore it anytime. Free includes 1 favorite and 3 archived sessions; Pro makes both unlimited.

Can I protect a session from accidental changes?

Yes. Lock a session and it can’t be modified, renamed or deleted until you unlock it — useful for reference sets you never want to lose.

Can I merge, split or compare sessions?

Yes. Merge combines two or more sessions into a new one and Split breaks one apart, both leaving the originals untouched. Pro adds Compare Sessions, a side-by-side diff showing which tabs were added, removed or shared, plus duplicate-session detection.

Backups & crash recovery

Never lose a set of tabs to a crash, update or mistake.

Can it restore my tabs after a browser crash?

Yes. Rolling auto-snapshots save your open windows in the background, so after a crash, update or unexpected restart you can bring your tabs back from the latest snapshot — even if you never saved a session yourself. Full walkthrough: How to restore Chrome tabs after a crash.

How do I back up or export my sessions?

Export everything — sessions, tab details and settings — to a portable JSON file, and import it back on any browser, with duplicate handling built in. You can also copy tabs as plain URLs, titles with URLs or Markdown links, or download them as TXT or CSV.

Can I turn my bookmarks into sessions?

Yes. Import Bookmarks shows a preview and converts bookmark folders into organized sessions. Bookmark access is requested only at the moment you press Import, never at install. Guide: How to turn Chrome bookmarks into organized sessions.

I deleted a session by mistake. Can I get it back?

If you have Pro with cloud recovery turned on, deleted sessions can be restored from the cloud for up to 3 days. Otherwise, check your latest auto-snapshot or a JSON backup — which is why regular exports are a good habit.

What happens to my sessions if I uninstall the extension?

The browser deletes an extension’s local data when it is removed, so export a JSON backup before uninstalling. Sessions you synced to the cloud stay in your account and come back when you reinstall and sign in.

Cloud sync & sharing

Your sessions on every device, and sharing tabs with others.

How does cloud sync work?

Sign in with Google and your named sessions sync securely to your private sessionmanager.net account. Free syncs up to 5 sessions; Pro syncs unlimited sessions automatically whenever you change them. More in How to backup and sync browser sessions across devices.

Will syncing overwrite changes I made on another device?

No. Each session is merged independently, so editing one session on your laptop never overwrites a different session you changed on your desktop.

Can I see my synced sessions without the extension?

Yes. Sign in on this website and open My Sessions to browse every synced session from any computer.

Can I share a set of tabs with someone?

Yes. Publish open tabs or a saved session as a share page hosted on sessionmanager.net and send the link. You can update its links from your latest tabs later, and Pro adds password protection and custom branding.

Tabs & performance

Freeing memory and taming hundreds of tabs.

Can it reduce memory used by open tabs?

Yes. The built-in tab suspender puts inactive tabs to sleep on a lightweight page to free RAM, and wakes them when you click. Pinned tabs, tabs playing audio and video calls are skipped automatically. Learn more in Browser tab suspension explained.

Can I stop certain sites from being suspended?

Yes. Add domains to the suspender whitelist, pick a preset or custom timer, or suspend and wake tabs manually. For more ways to cut memory use, read How to free up Chrome RAM.

How do I clean up duplicate tabs?

Close Duplicate Tabs removes repeated pages from your window in one click, and Session Cleanup (Pro) strips duplicate URLs, tracking parameters and empty tabs from saved sessions. See How to clean up duplicate and unwanted tabs.

Browsers & languages

Where Super Session Manager runs.

Which browsers are supported?

There are dedicated versions for Google Chrome (Chrome Web Store), Mozilla Firefox (Firefox Add-ons) and Microsoft Edge (Edge Add-ons). Each is free and installed from its official store.

Does it work in Brave, Vivaldi or other Chromium browsers?

Most Chromium-based browsers, such as Brave and Vivaldi, can install extensions from the Chrome Web Store, so the Chrome version generally works there. Chrome, Firefox and Edge are the browsers we officially test on.

Is the extension available in my language?

The extension interface is translated into 31 languages, including German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian and Hindi. You can change the display language in Settings. It also has dark and light themes.

Privacy & security

What stays on your device and what doesn’t.

Where are my sessions stored?

Locally in your browser by default. Nothing leaves your device unless you sign in and turn on cloud sync, which is optional and can be switched off anytime. Read the privacy policy for details.

Does the extension track my browsing?

No. The extension contains no analytics or tracking scripts and shows no third-party ads. It is built on Manifest V3 and asks for sensitive permissions such as bookmarks only when you use the feature that needs them.

How do I delete all my data?

In the extension’s Settings, the Danger Zone deletes all local sessions and temporary data, with an option to wipe your cloud copy at the same time.

Will it keep working after Chrome’s Manifest V3 change?

Yes. Super Session Manager is already built on Manifest V3, the current extension platform, so it isn’t affected by the phase-out of older extensions. Looking for a replacement for one that stopped working? See the Session Buddy alternative and OneTab alternative comparisons.

Plans & billing

Free vs Pro, payments and cancellation.

Is Super Session Manager free?

Yes. The free plan includes unlimited local sessions, one-click save and restore, rolling auto-snapshots, folders, the tab suspender, share pages, JSON import and export, and cloud sync for up to 5 sessions — free forever, no card required.

What does Pro add?

Pro unlocks unlimited cloud sync with auto-sync, multi-window and tab group saving, 100 rolling snapshots, unlimited favorites, archives and folders with subfolders, Advanced Mode, Compare Sessions, deleted-session recovery and the advanced tab utilities. Compare plans on the pricing page.

How do I pay, and is it secure?

Checkout runs through Paddle, which accepts major cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and other regional methods. We never store your card details. Choose monthly, yearly or a one-time lifetime plan.

Yes. Cancel anytime from your account and you keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for. Refunds follow Paddle’s refund policy — see our Terms & Conditions, or contact us with any billing question.
